I designed a vehicle hood/bonnet assembly in CATIA V5, as a part of the ' Automotive sheet metal design ' course. At first, I got the class A surface of the outer panel from the styling team. I designed the outer panel, inner panel, hinge, and striker reinforcements. The inner panel is designed to diverge the forces away from the passenger cabin in case of a frontal impact. The outer panel is wrapped around the inner panel using hemming process with a clearance of 0.2mm from the inner panel surfaces for the application of structural adhesive. In this case we cannot use spot welding to join the inner and outer panels. So we use mastic sealant between the inner panel and outer panel to join them and also to damp the vibrations. A clearance of about 5mm is allowed between the mastic points on the inner panel and the outer panel for applying mastic sealant. The draft analysis of the inner panel was successfully performed with an angle of a minimum of 7° for the stamping process.
